Before the outage

Identify critical loads, charge batteries, test generators, inspect extension cords, store fuel safely if applicable and know how to operate transfer equipment.

During the outage

Keep fuel-burning generators outdoors and well away from openings. Avoid overloading circuits and do not backfeed household wiring.

Food and refrigeration

Minimize refrigerator and freezer door opening. Use a thermometer where food safety decisions matter.

Communications

Keep phones charged, have more than one charging method and maintain access to local emergency information.

After power returns

Allow equipment to stabilize, refuel only when safe, recharge batteries and note what failed or ran short so the plan improves before the next event.

Useful next steps

Safety note: Electricity can cause shock, fire, equipment damage and utility hazards. Use qualified professional guidance for permanent wiring, transfer equipment or grid-connected work.
