1. List essential loads

Start with refrigeration, lighting, communications, internet, sump pumps, selected outlets and any medically necessary equipment. Record running watts and starting or surge requirements where applicable.

2. Decide your outage target

A system for two hours of internet and lights is very different from one intended to run refrigeration, pumps and heating equipment for several days.

3. Choose an energy source

Combustion generators turn fuel into electricity. Batteries store electricity. Solar can recharge batteries when conditions permit. Hybrid systems combine approaches.

4. Plan the connection safely

Never backfeed a home through an improvised cord. Permanent or semi-permanent household backup may require listed transfer equipment and licensed electrical work depending on local rules.

5. Build in margin

Do not size a system exactly to the arithmetic sum of loads. Starting surges, inverter limits, temperature, battery aging and future needs all matter.

6. Test before the outage

Whatever system you choose, run a controlled test with the actual essential loads and keep instructions, fuel or charging gear, extension leads and safety equipment accessible.
