Running watts
Running or rated watts describe the continuous load a generator is intended to support under specified conditions.
Maximum or surge watts
Some generators can provide extra power briefly to start motors or handle short peaks. This should not be treated as the continuous rating.
Loads are not always constant
Refrigerators, pumps and tools cycle or vary. Electronics may draw far less than their nameplate maximum during typical use.
Power factor
Some AC loads draw current in ways that complicate simple watt arithmetic. For demanding motors or specialized equipment, manufacturer data and professional guidance are useful.
Add margin
Avoid planning to operate continuously at the absolute maximum. Margin improves flexibility for startup surges and unexpected loads.
